The House that Ruth Built: Old Yankee Stadium

Before it was officially closed in 2008, Old Yankee Stadium was one of the most iconic stadiums in all of sports. It is not often that one stadium sees great players such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Derek Jeter, Roger Maris and many more hall of fame players play hundreds of games in their career.

The original Yankee Stadium opened in 1923 and was the primary home of the New York Yankees throughout its 85 year history. The stadium became known as “The House that Ruth Built” because he was the main star of the team at the time of the construction of the stadium. If it was not for the stardom of Babe Ruth, then the New York Yankees probably would not have had the money to build such an elaborate stadium.

The original Yankee Stadium saw more iconic sporting events than any other venue in the United States. While many of the iconic features of the stadium still remain in the new stadium, it was still a major mistake to tear it down. Baseball is all about tradition and history, and there is nothing more historic in baseball than the Yankees and Yankees Stadium.
