A Super Fan’s Guide to Enjoying Sports

How do you enjoy a good sporting event? You specifically. I have a friend who cloisters himself in his man cave for the entire NCAA basketball season. No joke, he barely answers the phone. If that’s how you decide to do it, I’d recommend a decent set of door locks or at least calling this number, 1-877-679-4827 for a security system. At the very least, I’d recommend a safer and healthier alternative.

Like what?

How about just going to the game?!

Going to a sporting event can be expensive which is why, if you are a fan of the pigskin, it’s usually wise to plane and prepare for the event. Set up a budget so you can afford the tickets and make sure you have transportation squared away. Usually you have enough time before an event to make these contingencies.

And sure, while preparation is one way to ensure that you enjoy sports, another thing that helps is simply watching sports with other people.

It’s the feeling of community that makes watching a sporting event that much richer of an experience. However you decide to do it, just don’t cloister yourself like my friend. Not only is it unhealthy, it can be dangerous too.

Many cities and sports teams attempt to claim the title “Title Town: USA”, but one sports team makes the best argument for this title: The National Football League’s Green Bay Packers. With 11 NFL championship’s and 4 Super Bowl championship’s, the Green Bay Packers are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports.

Founded in 1919 by George Calhoun and Curly Lambeau, the Packers are one of the oldest franchies in the NFL and all of football. The name “Packers” comes from the teams’ original sponsor: The Indian Packing Company. Under coach Lambeau the Packer’s won their first NFL championship in 1929, and went on to win three consecutive titles (1929-1931). The Packers are the only team to have won three consecutive titles, and have accomplished this feat twice (1929-1931, 1965-67). Along with their NFL championships, the Packers won the first two Super Bowls as well as Super Bowls XXXI (1996) and XLV (2010).

In order to be as successful as the Green Bay Packers, a team needs great players and coaches. Some of the early-era legends include names like Willie Davis, Bart Starr, Don Hutson and Ray Neitschke. More modern names include players like Brett Favre, Sterling Sharpe and the late Reggie White. Legendary coaches include Curly Lambeau, Vince Lombardi, and Mike Holmgrem.

A great team also needs a great rival; found in the Chicago Bears. The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers have the longest rivalry in the NFL; starting with both of their inceptions in 1919, to the present day.

As one can tell the Green Bay Packers have a long and storied history, and are likely to continue making history as holders of “Titletown, USA”.

The first baseball team to go on the road and be paid a regular salary was the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. The team was organized and managed by Harry Wright, who revolutionized the game with his strategies and focus on defense. His younger brother, George, was the club’s unquestioned “star,” and is generally recognized
as the game’s first “superstar.” George Wright’s established position was shortstop, and he was also a superb hitter, although not necessarily of the long-ball variety.

Other standouts besides the Wright brothers Read the rest of this entry »
